Prayer rugs are part of the Moslem's household equipment and small versions of these rugs go with him on his travels, so it is not surprising that many of the loveliest Turkish rugs take this form, with either a single or triple prayer niche at one end, supported by columns and generally with a hanging lamp in the centre.

In these rugs the borders are frequently wider than is usual and broken into many "stripes".

For anyone wishing to gain ideas for needle-made rugs a careful study of the Central Asian and Caucasian type of rug is particularly useful, both as regards colour and design, since on the whole these are less elaborate than the Persian and Turkish rugs and their patterns are easier to absorb and adapt for individual needs.
