Carpet manufacture
Probably the earliest of all the carpet factories was the one at Wilton and it is only there that hand-knotting has been practised of late years.
One of the sad repercussions of this machine age is that 1958 saw the end of this once most flourishing and highly individual business, although machine-made carpets are still being produced at Wilton.
In the East the art continues to employ many people and on the whole the tradition of good workmanship persists, but in Europe generally (with the exception of a comparatively small number of workers producing hand-made carpets in France and Portugal) it is only the amateur who is willing and happy to spend time in such work.
